Best Way To Clean Tile Floors

While tile floors are unbelievably durable, certain kinds of tile need more attention. Ceramic and porcelain floor tiles are fairly low maintenance, while coarse tiles require individualized care and often special cleaners.

Best Way To Clean Ceramic And Porcelain Tile Floors

Follow this simple process to clean ceramic and porcelain tile:

  1. Clean up loose debris: Sweep and/or vacuum your tile floors frequently to keep them from getting dull.

  2. Choose the right floor mop: Clean tile with a mild cleaner and clean water using a rag or chamois-type mop rather than a sponge mop.
  3. Be on the look for tile stains: If you find a discolored spot, use the appropriate cleaner for the stain for the most efficient clean.
  4. Watch for soap residue: If your tiles look foggy after cleaning, you might be dealing with soapy residue. Remove the film with a soft general-purpose cleaner
  5. Dry the tiles: Don't let your glazed tile floors air-dry because the standing water will form water spots. Deal with that by drying the floor with a clean, lint-free cloth after washing.

How to Clean Stone Tile Floors

Chemicals in normal cleaners can damage the surface of these floors. Alternatively, clean your stone tiles with detergents made specifically for natural stone floors.

Slate Tile

You may use a mild detergent on slate floors, as long as it doesn't have acidic properties. If your slate floor is coated, avoid water spots by drying the tile immediately with a soft towel.

Marble Tile

Marble tiles are high-maintenance. Avoid cleaning it with anything with an acidic PH level, as they can etch the tile's surface.

Granite Tile

Granite tile needs to be cleaned with a mild detergent that is pH-neutral. A harsh cleaner may discolor the tile.

How to Clean Resilient Tile Floors

A resilient tile is a great option if you want a surface that's easy on the feet and needs little maintenance. Remember these tips when cleaning your resilient tile floor:

Vinyl Tiles

This super resilient flooring type is easy to maintain. Simply sweep or vacuum up debris and mop with a vinyl cleaning solution or water and vinegar.

Linoleum TilesThe best way to clean tile floors and the best tools to use.

After sweeping or vacuuming the floor, wash the linoleum tile with linoleum flooring cleaning solution or Borax detergent and water. Rinse and let the floor dry. To maintain your linoleum floors, apply a layer of wax and buff to a shine every 3 to 6 months.

Cork Tiles

If the cork surface is sealed with polyurethane like most are, clean with water and mild cleaner or white vinegar, then rinse well. If it is unfinished or waxed, follow the cleaning instructions for cleaning polyurethane floors.

How to Clean Tile Grout

Grout is porous and absorbs grease and other stains and thus can be tricky to keep clean. Here's how to get your grout looking new:

  1. Scrub grout: Rub cleaner on the stain, let it sit overnight, then scrub the stain in the morning with a stiff nylon brush
  2. Seal grout: Apply a silicone-based sealer on the grout to resist future stains. This technique works best when applied 10-14 days after the grout is installed or renewed.
