Numerous types of bacteria and viruses are present on the surface of everyday household items. With an increased awareness of good hygiene  due to the current pandemic, it is now more necessary than ever to keep these frequently-touched surfaces clean and disinfected. Adopt this habit in the long-term to avoid coming in contact with germs present on common surfaces and getting sick. Before you start worrying, you don't have to scrub your house floor-to-ceiling every single day to protect yourself. Instead, clean these commonly-touched surfaces, and you'll be good to go.

1. Personal Items

Personal items such as mobile phones and credit cards are one of the most frequently-contacted surfaces. Guess what - on average, a person touches their mobile phone 96 times each day! Each time you're using your phone, you're also transmitting microorganisms to the mobile phone's surface. Simultaneously, credit cards are passed around for payments to retailers daily, making them prone to bacteria and viruses. Clean and disinfect these items using a disinfectant cleaner. Make sure you don’t get that disinfectant on the magnetic chip of the credit card.

2. Kitchen Counters

If you're cooking regularly in the kitchen, you should gear up for potential bacteria and viruses landing on the counters. Be aware of cross-contamination when handling raw meats so you don’t transfer microorganisms to other kitchen surfaces. Kitchen counters are one of the dirtiest places in the house that harbor bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli. Wipe your kitchen counter regularly with a kitchen cleaner.

3. Bathroom Surfaces

Next comes the area with the highest number of germs in the home -  the bathroom! Any surface in the bathroom you can lay eyes on has the potential to harbor thousands of germs on a daily basis, such as counters, sinks, and toothbrush holders.   Gather the essential bathroom cleaning tools before you start. Get in the habit of doing a thorough cleaning regime for your bathroom once a week and disinfecting common surfaces daily.

4. Door Knobs, Light Switches, and Appliance Handles

While many people assume that the toilet  is the top germ-holding spot in the house, studies suggest otherwise. Bacteria and viruses, especially COVID-19 virus, can live on plastic and steel surfaces for up to 3 days.  Doorknobs, switches, and handles are some of the most contacted surfaces you'll find in the house. Don't overlook handles of household appliances such as refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines, etc. Make sure you disinfect these surfaces daily with a disinfectant spray.

5. Keyboards and Remote Controls

If these two spots don't have noticeable debris on them, you might not even consider these surfaces to have  germs. On the contrary, the tiny nooks and crannies on remotes and keyboards can hide germs that can come in contact with your hands when you touch them. It may surprise you, but 320 bacteria particles can be found on the remote controls, and approximately 3000 bacteria per square inch on a keyboard! Use a disinfectant spray and a microfiber cloth to clean these surfaces regularly.

6. Pet Supplies

Pets carry a variety of germs on their body, especially if you’re letting them out of the house. You can’t stop your pets from bringing in these germs, but you can clean the surfaces they touch. Besides washing your pet, you should also clean their feeding bowls and toys regularly. Soak them in a solution of hot water and gentle soap  and dry thoroughly before placing it back. Avoid using disinfectant sprays or bleach since your pet can get sick if they lick or bite these objects.

Final Take

Practicing good hygiene in these uncertain times is crucial for the health and safety of yourself and those around you. Clean and disinfect these surfaces regularly to avoid the risk of germ-contamination. Remember to thoroughly clean your home and other high-contact surfaces regularly.
