Don't Skip These 5 Critical Steps When Cleaning the Toilet

Cleaning the toilet is the one chore almost everyone runs from since it feels a lot like punishment. While many people clean their toilets regularly, they're not cleaning them correctly. Merely getting this chore off your plate only results in the accumulation of dirt, dust, mold, bacteria, you name it! If you're already on the job, why not clean the toilet properly, so it's dirt-free AND germ-free? Here are a few tips that should help you along the way:

1. Coat the Hardware with Nail polish

The toilet bowl and seat get cleaned every time you're on toilet-cleaning duty, but there's a high chance you're forgetting about the teensy hardware keeping the toilet together, the bolts and screws. Look out for rust buildup if you've overlooked toilet hardware for too long. A trouble-free solution instead of getting the rust off is to prevent it in the first place. Coat the bolts and screws with clear nail polish. It'll provide a protective layer that prevents the formation of rust and they won't be getting loose anytime soon.

2. Use Hot Water for a Clogged Toilet

Going in on a toilet with your sleeves all rolled up and a toilet plunger is a time-consuming task and also not a favorable one since you have to do the work yourself. Not to mention having to suffer through the stinkiness of the clog. Instead of investing your time and putting your olfactory senses at stake, let the hot water do the job. Fill a bucket with hot water or boil a pot of water on the stove, and gradually pour it inside the toilet bowl. Step out of the bathroom while the hot water works its magic. It takes around 15-20 minutes for the toilet to fully unclog. For added efficiency, add a little bathroom cleaner in the hot water tub before pouring it down. However, make sure you don't pour any hot water outside the bowl, especially in winters, since the temperature difference can crack a porcelain toilet.

3. Clean, But Also Disinfect

Before you start asking, 'I'm cleaning the toilet properly, shouldn't that naturally disinfect it too?', the answer is no. Cleaning a toilet gets rid of the dirt, but not the germs. You’re most likely only transferring the germs from one place to another when you’re cleaning the toilet. Disinfecting, on the other hand, is what will  do the trick. Use a powerful disinfectant to spray all over the toilet, which will kill the germs. Let it rest for a few minutes before wiping it down.

4. Avoid a Grubby Toilet Brush

Firstly, you should replace your toilet brush every six months, or when it's discolored and damaged beyond repair, whichever comes first. Secondly, even if you're replacing your toilet brush after every few months, you still need to clean it if you want a clean toilet. Putting the toilet brush away after each use without cleaning it first will, in the end, transfer more dirt and germs than in the first place. Therefore, spray the toilet brush with a disinfectant and place it in hot water for a few minutes. Next, let it dry before putting it back in its spot.

5. Make it Smell Nice

The toilet can easily be called one of the smelliest places in the house. Cleaning helps eliminate most of the smell by sweeping away the dirt and bacteria, but you can always take it a step further. Pour a few drops of your favorite essential oil in the toilet bowl after you've cleaned it. Another method is to spray an air-freshener on the cardboard core of the toilet paper. The next person entering the bathroom will be thinking it's their lucky day to go about their business on a toilet that smells like heaven!

In Conclusion

When you're visiting the toilet multiple times each day, it deserves a little care and attention as much as the rest of your home. Don't skip out on toilet-day; it might be a daunting task, but it's definitely worth the trouble.
