Eco-Friendly Pest Control for Cockroaches
Roaches are incredibly prolific, and incredibly hard to get rid of.
One pair of cockroaches, allowed to reproduce in peace and with bountiful food available, can become an infestation of millions in just a couple of years.
The threat and disgust responses brought about by cockroaches are evolutionary. Our cave-dwelling ancestors learned to avoid creepy crawlies of all sorts for fear of poisoning or disease.
When our natural revulsion to roaches escalates to katsaridaphobia, victims can become too terrified to get out of bed, enter the bathroom or kitchen, or even open closets ad cupboards for fear of finding cockroaches.
Cockroaches can pose serious health risks to you and your family.
Roaches are known to spread more than 30 types of bacteria, six species of parasitic worms, and several other types of human pathogens.
Salmonella and E. coli can live in the cockroaches’ waxy outer coating for at least two months and can transfer to any foods that the roach touches, causing vomiting, fever, and diarrhea if ingested.
Bacteria are also harbored in their feces, allowing for the spread of disease even when the bugs are no longer present. The C.D.C. (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention) have found that can be carriers of other intestinal diseases as well, such as salmonella typhimurium, Entamoeba histolytica, and the poliomyelitis virus.
Other studies have shown that allergens in cockroach fecal matter (as well as in the saliva) can trigger life-threatening respiratory attacks to flair in those who suffer from asthma.
So how can you get started making your home unwelcome to these, and other, unwanted pests?
The first thing you need to do is to get to know your enemy! Once you understand it’s habits and preferences, you can create an eco-friendly pest control plan for your home to make it uninviting for cockroaches.
Here’s how to get started:
- Remove all accessible food
- Keep things dry
- Clean, Clean, Clean
Remove all critter-accessible food. Your first step is to throw out any food/ingredients that are not completely sealed when not in use. Food that can be smelled by pests will continue to attract them. Keep in mind that any food that was previously accessible is probably contaminated already.
Next, you need to remove any remaining food in your pantries or cupboards and thoroughly clean these areas, removing any crumbs or remnants of food.
Don’t forget to seal up pet food containers and food/water bowls when not in use, as well.
Keep things dry. Roaches like to congregate in damp areas, so pay special attention to places that are or can become moist, like under sinks, or areas with exposed pipes.
Repair any leaks and throw out any dampened materials like rags or newspapers.
Clean, Clean, Clean. Keeping your home clean is really the best defense against roaches.
- Wipe down and disinfect all surfaces, including the walls. Deep clean carpets, sweep and mop the floors, and dust until everything has been cleaned.
- Don’t forget those areas that are out of easy reach, like under and behind refrigerators, freezers, ovens, washers & dryers, and cabinets under sinks. Not only do these areas tend to collect more crumbs and trash, but they’re also the type of dark places where roaches love to hide.
- Cleaning up immediately after meals is an important step to stop attracting roaches into the kitchen in search of your dirty plates and leftover food. Make sure you take the garbage out regularly so as not to attract them.
A thorough and regular cleaning routine will keep cockroaches and other vermin away.
