5 Effective Steps to Declutter the Kitchen

The kitchen is one of the most frequented rooms in a house.   A messy kitchen equals a messy house, and clutter is NOT your friend! Decluttering the kitchen isn’t always as easy as people make it out to be, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed during this task. The key is to take it one step at a time without overburdening yourself. So, where do you start? Follow the steps below to start decluttering your kitchen and have it look as good as new


Get Rid of Things You Don’t Need

Many of us keep extra supplies around the kitchen, whether we need them or not for our daily kitchen routine. Believe it or not, hanging onto tons of kitchen appliances and crockery isn't always ideal. It creates a cluttered space, and chances are you're only keeping them around for decorative purposes, or you don't have the heart to throw them out. On the other hand, clearing out the things that you don't need can make more space in the kitchen to organize the ones that you do. Donate or gift those five different types of whisks, stop buying new blenders when you already have a working one, and you’ll notice a tidier kitchen immediately!

Downsize the Tableware and Cutlery

Let's face the facts - nobody needs twenty mugs of varying colors and sizes hiding in the kitchen cupboards. Another mistake homeowners tend to make is storing a large stock of tableware and cutlery in their kitchen. Not only does this take up space, but you might not even use these items on a day-to-day basis.  Let's say there are four members in your home, but you're keeping thirty serving plates. It doesn't make any sense, does it? Keep the number of each tableware and cutlery item according to your family members, and maybe a few extras for house parties and guests. Give the rest of them away or store them elsewhere in the home such as a hutch. 


Labeling & Storing

It's easy to throw in the spices, herbs, and other food ingredients as they are on the kitchen shelves and cupboards. But the real work is when you have to shift everything around to find that one item. For this purpose, it's practical to store staples such as rice, flour, spices, powdered ingredients, etc., in labeled containers. Additionally, make use of the mason jars lying around or small glass containers instead of getting plastic containers to make your kitchen eco-friendly. Use a permanent marker to label the containers, or print out the labels in an easy-to-read font. Another useful tip is to store either similar or most-used ingredients in a basket. This trick makes it easier to grab ingredients without going through a lot of hustle. For example, gather all the spices and herbs you regularly use in your recipes and place them in one basket.

Clear the Counters

Kitchen counters are usual victims of never-ending items sitting on them, most of which are there for no reason. Get rid of all the mail, coffee mugs, books, etc., lying on the counter. Next, wipe down the counter with a kitchen cleaner after you've cleared the space. Now, think practically and only keep the things you really need on the counter. Maybe a few utensils, cutlery, and appliances that you’ll need right in front. Also, buy utensils and cutlery organizers to keep the counter organized. Limit the counter items according to the size of the counter area. Generally, you should only keep 4-5 items so the counter isn't cluttered and you can easily grab those things on the go. 


Organizing the Pantry 

With an effective organization of the pantry, you’ll be minimizing clutter AND making the entire cooking process as smooth as possible. There are two primary steps you'll need to follow to organize the pantry. First, rearrange staple foods. For instance, if you have three bags of rice, make sure they're all near each other. Keep regularly used items towards the front of the pantry and the less-used items at the back. Put all the spices in one space, snacks in another, and food staples in the next.

Final Word

A decluttered kitchen means less time looking for utensils and ingredients and more time enjoying the cooking process. Once you've decluttered your kitchen, it won't be hard to maintain it. Don't forget - think practically when decluttering the kitchen, not decoratively!
